Streaking

Streaking is defined as the non-sexual act of taking off one's clothes and running naked through a public place. Imagine undergraduates from the National University of Singapore running naked across halls of their campus! Should this be banned due to the nature of its indecency? In my opinion streaking is not a crime. Although streaking is considered indecent, it is acted out of fun and freedom of expression.

Streaking is considered indecent. Due to Singapore's tradition of people being covered at all times, except maybe at the pool, it is hard for Singaporeans to accept nakedness. Thus we adopt Streaking to be indecent and offensive. It has been treated, by the singapore government, as of great severity and harsh punishment was meted out.

However indecency does not determine that Streaking is a crime. Flashing or exposing oneself is rightfully a crime because the individual who does so often focuses on vulnerable targets with the intention of sexually intimidating and humiliating the person. In streaking, nudity is in the right spirit and not sexually threatening thus it should not be considered a crime.

Also, streaking is done out of sheer fun and freedom of expression. It is true that every society needs to maintain a certain standard of propriety but for streaking to be a crime, prudery and punishment is taken too far. In my opinion there is no reason to limit fun and freedom of expression, regardless physical or intellectual. This can be shown in the recent streaking incident of NUS students. They stripped in celebration of a victory and thus it was not presented in a sexually threatening way, but was embarked upon as an expression of youthful daring and exuberance.

The fact that streaking is nude, indecent and offensive does not prove that it is a crime. Also, fun and freedom of expression, which are the main driving forces for streaking, should not be inhibited. Thus i conclude that streaking should not be a crime.
